The Zorlu Energy Group
The Zorlu Energy Group, whose foundations were laid with the establishment Zorlu Energy Electricity Generation Inc in 1993, is today one of the leading and strongest players in the Turkish energy sector.
Zorlu Energy Group’s installed capacity of 420 MW electricity and 207 tons/hour steam at 6 natural gas-powered plants reached 561 MW in 2008 with the addition of 9 more plants (generating 141 MW) to the portfolio through the privatization deal. Most of the electricity generated by the Group’s plants is fed to the DUY (“Stabilization & Reconciliation”) system; however some is also used to supply uninterrupted, high-quality energy to industrial and business concerns.
In keeping with its principle of diversifying its products and services through a strategy of pursuing growth and development in every aspect of the energy industry, the Group engages in activities to advance its present strong position and to defend its presence and strength in the national and international arenas.
Zorlu Energy Group:
Diversifies its portfolio in order to utilize renewable energy potential in the best way possible through renewable energy resources such as hydro, wind, and geothermal.
Maintains a highly competitive stance by adapting itself to changing market dynamics through resource diversity.
At its power plants, makes use of technologies that enhance energy efficiency both economically and environmentally; makes an effort to encourage such practices throughout the sector.
Engages in activities to achieve energy supply security by making the most productive use possible of national resources while employing methods that are environmentally aware and sustainable.
With this vision, Zorlu Energy Group:
Plans to increase the 135 MW capacity of its Osmaniye wind power plant (scheduled to go into production in 2009) to 245 MW with an additional 110 MW investment for which a license was received in 2008.
Is currently working on feasibility studies and project development work for hydroelectric power plants located at Sandalcık (Sami Soydam) and Narlı on the Dalaman River (total installed capacity 204 MW) and for a third in Tirebolu (60 MW pre-feasibility).
Has expanded its renewable energy portfolio with power plants that were added to the Group in 2008 and is currently working on projects to renew these plants and increase their capacities.
Zorlu Energy Group was awarded the operating rights of the Denizli Kızıldere electrical power plant, whose 15 MW installed capacity makes it the biggest geothermal power plant in operation in Turkey today, for a 30-year period through ADÜAŞ deal in 2008. The contract also covers the rights to the entire Kızıldere geothermal zone. Zorlu took over operation of the plant in September 2008 and site operations conducted since then have increased the capacity utilization rate to 90% or higher. Work is currently in progress to stabilize the level of production output. Kızıldere is one of the best known sources of geothermal energy in the world. Reservoir capacity studies are being carried out for a new 60 MW power plant in the area. Consideration is also being given to ways, such as re-injection, to make the area’s geothermal energy more sustainable on a long-term basis. The activities planned at Kızıldere include heat as well as electricity production. In that respect, the project targets to contribute towards local social and economic development by creating employment opportunities in addition to its implications as an example of environmental and energy-production sustainability.
Zorlu Energy is currently involved in obtaining licenses to set up geothermal power plants in two other geothermal zones for which it holds licenses: Kütahya-Simav and Manisa-Alaşehir.
The Zorlu Energy Companies Group’s activities are guided by the principle of ensuring that society also gains while it does. Particular care is given to ensure that investments cause no harm to the environment or to social textures. Every effort is made to further the development and wellbeing of the localities where the Group is active.
As a demonstration of its environmental awareness, the Group entered into the first carbon emissions trading agreement in its sector. This agreement, signed with the firm of EcoSecurities, covers the 135 MW wind power plant being built at Osmaniye in southern Turkey. The Osmaniye plant, which is scheduled to go into production in 2009, will generate 500,000 MW/h of electricity a year. Through the use of renewable wind energy as its source, this production will avoid the release of approximately 400,000 tons of CO2 gas into the atmosphere every year. Similar agreements are planned for another 110 MW in capacity that is to be added to the Osmaniye facility, for a 50 MW wind power plant currently being built in Pakistan, and for natural gas conversion and cogeneration plant projects in Russia and Israel.
The Zorlu Energy Companies Group is currently concentrating its attentions on becoming a regional force by taking advantage of opportunities that present themselves in rapidly growing energy markets outside Turkey in the countries of Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Projects now under way in Russia, Pakistan, and Israel represent important steps being taken in this direction.
In addition to electrical energy production, the Group is also building new power plants in Turkey and abroad, providing maintenance and repair services for group and non-group facilities, exploring for natural gas exploration in the Thracian region, and distributing natural gas in the Trakya and Gaziantep regions. The Group also holds oil exploration licenses for the Adana, İzmir and Muğla regions of Turkey.
